Nordic New Year

2019 is here! I am looking forward to this fresh new year after the roller coaster ride that was 2018. I feel like personally and in business 2018 was a growing year which comes with its peaks and valleys.

Cleaning out and simplifying my home has been therapeutic while also calming. I’ve been very inspired by the monochromatic palette and simple lines of Nordic spaces.

Scandinavian design shares common design choices to farmhouse style like the love of white walls and natural wood. So it is easy to mix in Nordic influences with my current farmhouse pieces.

We have a busy January and February filled with birthdays so I wanted to decorate my mantle in a way that would last through Valentine’s Day.

I chose pieces in my home that lent towards Nordic winter coziness: faux evergreen branches from my Christmas decor, a modern geometric vase that had been storing tea in the kitchen, the wood bead garland I made last Christmas, a string of Target dollar spot wood stars, IKEA candles and a DIY paper star.

The paper star was a super fun and surprisingly not too difficult DIY. I took photos of the steps as I followed this great tutorial video {here} by Francois et Moi.

DIY Nordic Paper Star

Materials Needed:

8 pieces of square cardstock (I used this black 12×12 cardstock from Hobby Lobby) or click here for similar item on amazon.

Something to help you crease the paper fold either strong fingers, a ruler, pen etc.

Step 1: Fold in half to create a large triangle

Step 2: Open back to square and fold top corners to match up to the fold lines to create sort of a kite shape.

Step 3: Fold the bottom corners to the fold line which will create a diamond shape.

Step 4:

Step 5: Fold the long end so that it’s edge is parallel to the folds you made in step 4 (this makes much more sense in her video {here} I am someone who has to see it so please if you’re feeling confused go watch the video. You will do this in both directions so that you create fold lines for the next step.

Step 6: After you’ve made the fold lines from step 5 you should see an X in the middle of your diamond shape. Now you will fold the short end on top of itself while folding the long point backwards to create a two pointed shape (long point and short point)

Step 7: Repeat steps 1-6 eight times for each point of the star. Then you will slide the shorter point inside the large point of another to create the star. Continue fitting all of the pieces together to form the 8 pointed star. Once all of the pieces fit together you can keep turning and pushing them tighter together until you have one secure piece.

And Voila!

If you make your own star please leave a comment below or tag me on Instagram @thedottedbow I’d love to see how yours turn out.

Best of 2018 : Reflecting on the Pretty Squares

Reflecting back on 2018 I am so proud of the growth this little brand has accomplished. I feel comfort in the direction the business is going and foundation I’ve built to continue on this home loving journey.

Best of home decor trends

The biggest change was and is breaking through the box of just being “modern farmhouse” to “all things home”. My style as well as yours is always evolving. I like to pull from many design inspirations to make my home feel gathered rather than picked out of a catalog styled by someone else.

Home trends

Sometimes I like boho colorful styles and other days I want more of a neutral modern vibe. I am currently very infatuated with Scandinavian design but I am mixing it with my farmhouse pieces.

Home trends

The point is our homes are a reflection of us and we don’t just fit into one design style box. There are no rules except you should always love what you have in your home. If you don’t love it get rid of it!

Home trends

I have been so lucky to work with an amazing group of influential women through instagram. Seeing how they style the dotted bow products is pure joy.

I also partnered with several companies to incorporate their products into my home. Being on this side of the business was challenging with the pressure to get the perfect picture. These experiences pushed me to be creative in my own home styling while learning more about the unbelievable photo editing tools available in free apps!

I am so thankful for everyone who has visited this blog, the Etsy shop and who follows along through social media. Your likes and comments make the tough days better and the good days great because running a small business is far from easy.

2018 has had some pretty squares. I’d love to hear what your favorites are. Please leave me a comment or question below.

Goodbye 2018!

Meet Fawn, @ALWAYSCHASINGLIFE

{Illinois}

Hi!  My husband and I bought our cookie cutter home two years ago and have been working on it room by room ever since. I am always trying to figure out how to help our home serve us better right now. We are constantly updating things as our needs change and we have a lot of fun in updating our home together. As a mom, I am always looking for ways to simplify our home and keep it organized. If I had to classify our home- I would say our style is “modern farmhouse”. I’m a sucker for white walls, wood furniture and black and white photos. 🖤

Say Hello to Abbey,

@ABBEYLEEGRACEDESIGNS

{Saskatchewan}

I am 37 and a mother of 3. 2 girls and one boy. My oldest is Madison (15), my son Pace (7), and my little Harper (5). They keep me busy and on my toes.

I have been working in the design/styling industry for about 7 years now, and I love it. I only do referral based business now as with kids going a million different directions, and a part time job in a dental office, I just don’t have the time. However, one day, I will only do what I really love to do.

I am self taught. I have always had the “knack” for styling and found this type of work easy and fun. I love to find items and use them in a non traditional way if I can.

My dream is to one day own a store that I can sell my ideas out of, run DIY workshops that I bring other makers in to teach, and sell local products out of. I also want to design and sell decor boxes here in Canada as we are limited here and I feel we need it!

I like to keep things simple with design – clean lines and a lot of neutrals. I love to mix rustic, vintage, and modern for a bright and new, yet cozy feel. I really started to pursue my passion for decor and home design in the last few years and I feel like I’m still developing my style.

Hello Felicia,

@NAVARRE_FARMHOUSE

{Florida}

Felicia is a dental hygienist, photographer, Air Force wife, and momma of 2. Being from Ky and growing up in the country, she always dreamed of having a white farmhouse.  The farmhouse is close to the Santa Rosa Sound so they have a waterview instead of an acreage view. Her style is modern farmhouse mixed with transitional elements.  Her spaces are light and airy with hints of grays and blues.

Halloween Home Decor Trends Haunting your Feeds

Halloween is one of those holidays we can all get super creative with decor but there are some major trends happening that are hard to resist not giving in to. I’ve rounded up my favorite Halloween decor trends that are updated, modern takes on the sometimes very cookie cutter traditional mass produced decorations. Don’t worry no inflatables are included! And now let the dotted bow home haunt commence (insert spooky laugh)

The basic starter kit needed for an instagram photo frenzy are listed below:

✔️ Flying paper bats

✔️ Full size skeleton

✔️ XL spider

✔️ cobwebs

First impressions of your Halloween decor style starts at the front door. Creepy Halloween doormats, a river of pumpkins on the stairs or a ginormous spider are the details that will make your haunted Halloween home stand out from the crowd!

Alright now don’t think you’re even close to being done we haven’t even walked in the door yet! The Halloween decor must haves inside your home are flying bats, full size skeletons that have their own names and personalities and spiders!

I’m obsessed with the flying bat trend. It’s so simple you can even DIY the paper bats or order a pack super cheap from Amazon. They make a huge statement even if you keep all your everyday decor in place.
