Meet Fawn, @ALWAYSCHASINGLIFE

{Illinois}

Hi!  My husband and I bought our cookie cutter home two years ago and have been working on it room by room ever since. I am always trying to figure out how to help our home serve us better right now. We are constantly updating things as our needs change and we have a lot of fun in updating our home together. As a mom, I am always looking for ways to simplify our home and keep it organized. If I had to classify our home- I would say our style is “modern farmhouse”. I’m a sucker for white walls, wood furniture and black and white photos. 🖤

Say Hello to Abbey,

@ABBEYLEEGRACEDESIGNS

{Saskatchewan}

I am 37 and a mother of 3. 2 girls and one boy. My oldest is Madison (15), my son Pace (7), and my little Harper (5). They keep me busy and on my toes.

I have been working in the design/styling industry for about 7 years now, and I love it. I only do referral based business now as with kids going a million different directions, and a part time job in a dental office, I just don’t have the time. However, one day, I will only do what I really love to do.

I am self taught. I have always had the “knack” for styling and found this type of work easy and fun. I love to find items and use them in a non traditional way if I can.

My dream is to one day own a store that I can sell my ideas out of, run DIY workshops that I bring other makers in to teach, and sell local products out of. I also want to design and sell decor boxes here in Canada as we are limited here and I feel we need it!

Hello Felicia,

@NAVARRE_FARMHOUSE

{Florida}

Felicia is a dental hygienist, photographer, Air Force wife, and momma of 2. Being from Ky and growing up in the country, she always dreamed of having a white farmhouse.  The farmhouse is close to the Santa Rosa Sound so they have a waterview instead of an acreage view. Her style is modern farmhouse mixed with transitional elements.  Her spaces are light and airy with hints of grays and blues.

Halloween Home Decor Trends Haunting your Feeds

Halloween is one of those holidays we can all get super creative with decor but there are some major trends happening that are hard to resist not giving in to. I’ve rounded up my favorite Halloween decor trends that are updated, modern takes on the sometimes very cookie cutter traditional mass produced decorations. Don’t worry no inflatables are included! And now let the dotted bow home haunt commence (insert spooky laugh)

Halloween home decor trends flying paper bats home decor inspo Halloween mantle

The basic starter kit needed for an instagram photo frenzy are listed below:

✔️ Flying paper bats

✔️ Full size skeleton

✔️ XL spider

✔️ cobwebs

First impressions of your Halloween decor style starts at the front door. Creepy Halloween doormats, a river of pumpkins on the stairs or a ginormous spider are the details that will make your haunted Halloween home stand out from the crowd!

Alright now don’t think you’re even close to being done we haven’t even walked in the door yet! The Halloween decor must haves inside your home are flying bats, full size skeletons that have their own names and personalities and spiders!

I’m obsessed with the flying bat trend. It’s so simple you can even DIY the paper bats or order a pack super cheap from Amazon. They make a huge statement even if you keep all your everyday decor in place.

Sweet endings lead to fresh beginnings #anothermantlemonday

Happy 2018! Looking back on 2017 my heart is full. It was the best year welcoming our baby girl and finally tying the knot. So many wonderful adventures and time spent with loved ones. This business is getting bigger and continues to evolve…. its a beautiful thing.

Somehow it went from November to January in a blink of an eye. I know I’m always a bit sad to take down the holiday decor but as soon as I start it’s super cathartic ….just the clean simplicity and blankness left behind. I decided to keep the mantle slightly wintery since in most places it’s still cold and well, winter. So even though it’s in the 70’s here in the desert I kept a greenery color scheme using some of the leftover faux eucalyptus from our wedding. I spread out my Hearth and Home by Magnolia nesting houses and Ikea candles in between the leaves. I love the warm light the led candles give off in the evening to replace the magical Christmas tree lights that make the space so cozy.

I really love dressing up my mantle with garlands. I kept the natural wood bead garland from my Christmas mantle and added the silver metal “peace on earth” garland I picked up last holiday from Target. I found a faux evergreen wreath on super clearance at Joanns so I just stuck in some of the eucalyptus stems in it and voila! I didn’t even take the time to secure them with floral wire I just wove them in so I can easily pull them out later on.

I’m always excited looking forward to another year. It’s like a new chapter with 365 new pages yet to be written. 2017 was the year I got everything I ever wanted so here we go 2018 I’m ready for more🖤

XOXO

Carrara Marble: Home Style X Mommy Must-Have

Carrara marble countertops with a waterfall edge… um yes please! The beautiful white and grayish marble we’ve been seeing on HGTV, Instagram and Pinterest has a lot of us swooning for those sparkling white or high contrast modern kitchens. But this marble trend is popping up in more than just the kitchen you can find marble print textiles to enjoy that same luxurious vibe.

Our daughter, Avri, just received her upgraded big girl bed from Dockatot in their new Carrara Marble print.

It’s super stylish, super functional and literally hands down my personal number one mommy must have.

She’s been co-sleeping with us in her Dockatot Deluxe since she’s come home from the hospital. Our Dockatot was exactly what our family needed for convenient nighttime feedings, bonding and peace of mind.

Avri also loves it! She has slept through the night since she was 3 months old. It is also very convenient to take to Grandma’s house while I am at work during the week. She can have the same comforts of sleeping in her bed anywhere she goes. It was great for traveling we were able to fit it in a suitcase and slept soundly with our little one wherever we were.

As a mom I wanted my baby to be safe and comfortable when I was choosing a bed. My initial plan was more traditional, a bassinet followed by a crib. When my husband and I talked about sleeping arrangements his view was he wanted to keep the baby in our room for as long as possible. So although I was hesitant about co-sleeping at first it turned out to be the perfect fit for our family. Being right next to my newborn baby and seeing all her silly sleeping faces was priceless.

Having her Mom and Dad right next to her has given her so much love and comfort. I wouldn’t change a thing about co-sleeping except maybe a bigger bed… can you really ever have too much bed!

The other benefit for me about Dockatot was the covers for the bed. They are washable and very high quality. Our cover has been washed numerous times over 9 months and still looks like new.

The prints and colors available in the covers are beautiful. I am a mom who likes baby things to not be an eyesore in my house. I try to keep the gear as neutral as possible because inevitably it’s going to be all over the house. So for me it was important that her bed was also aesthetically appealing and matched our home style in a neutral color pallete.

Now all that’s left is a DIY toddler bed frame to fit the new Dockatot Grand and to figure out which fur sibling will win the fight for the old Dockatot.

Avri is so excited about her big girl bed and so are her Mommy & Daddy!

Click the photo below to get $10 off your Dockatot purchase or click here.

The DIY Mantle #anothermantlemonday

When you live in Arizona fireplaces are not too common as you’d imagine but I absolutely love mantles and the endless options to decorate them. My style started off very Fixer Upper Farmhouse inspired but as trends change I incorporate and evolve my style to what speaks to me. I find that if I stick with a neutral palette it’s easy to add in trendy pieces.

I’m really into mixing modern elements like the gold and greenery as well as the boho trend of mudcloth and macrame with my core farmhouse style. This mantlescape captures a lot of home decor trends at once.

The DIY mantle shelf

I found the two corbels on one of my junking adventures and knew they would be exactly what I needed to create the mantle I dreamed of. I enlisted my Dad to build a floating shelf inspired by one of Shanty to Chic’s diy projects I found on Pinterest for floating shelves. The plan was that it would rest on top of the corbels to complete the faux mantle. I gave everything a coat of Annie Sloan Pure White Chalk Paint to make it look like one piece and voila!

Decorating the mantle

I’m one of those people that just buys things I like and then figures out where it’s going once I get home. A lot of times I decorate my space by shopping in my house and moving furniture around. Decorating truly is my cardio! This photo captures my mantle dressed in a neutral year round look. The pieces are a mix of new, vintage, small shops and DIY projects.

Helpful tips for creating your own DIY mantle

  • Search local vintage markets, small shops, flea markets, wood shops or etsy to find old original, ornate, chippy corbels for an authentic Joanna Gaines farmhouse feel.
  • Get creative with “corbels” make your own from reclaimed wood or think outside the farmhouse box and use leather straps to hang your mantle shelf or metal piping for an industrial look. See some ideas on my Pinterest board
  • Make sure the corbels and the shelf are the same depth to make it look like one piece.
  • Plan ahead to ensure the shelf is deep enough and strong enough to hold all of your layered decor pieces.
  • Check out Pinterest for DIYs and inspo for mantle styles and then afterwards for decor ideas.
  • Choose a wall for your faux mantle that will be a focal point since you’ll be decorating and mantlescaping as seasons change or just because.
  • HAVE FUN! It’s your mantle it’s your decorating rules do what makes you happy- simple- overfilled-whatever makes your heart happy!

Ana White has this awesome DIY faux fireplace mantle with storage project.

I love so many things about this faux mantle from Thrifty & Chic. It’s so simple to start … just a stained wood floating box shelf and using molding and trim the faux fireplace is created.

A free standing mantle is a great heirloom piece that will get everyone talking like this one from The Rustic Life Blog. There are DIYs and store purchased free standing mantles or if you are a junking antiqueing thrifting Queen like one of my faves, Liz Marie Galvan you could have something gorgeous like this (gasp!)

Tell us about your day to day life and the journey of starting your business, Harper and Arrow Marketplace.

My day to day life involves caring for my young children and providing a stable loving environment for them. That is the first priority. And I am learning how to balance that with my growing business, Harper & Arrow Marketplace. My shop was born out of my passion for incorporating authentic vintage & antique pieces into our modern homes in a stylish way. I took something that was a passion of mine and turned it into a creative outlet and viable business.

When did you find your home and what was your house hunting process like? What was important when you were looking for your home?

We initially found our current home back in 2009 but were unable to buy it at that time. However when our first home finally sold in 2012, we had the opportunity to buy this home which we’d first looked at in 2009. When looking for a home, I like to joke that I simply wanted a front door. It sounds funny, but our first home did not have a traditional front door so we had to enter through the back or side of the home. Humble beginnings. So when we were house hunting several years ago, I wanted a home with a front door. Plain and simple. It was also important to me to have a home in a good school district for my children’s sake. Other than that, we really kept a very open mind while house hunting. My husband and I both have the ability to see beyond what exists in a home, and we can see what it can be. So we knew no matter where we ended up, that we could make it our own.

IMG_1090IMG_0539IMG_0541IMG_0542IMG_0543IMG_0544IMG_0540IMG_0950IMG_0951

What was the most challenging space to decorate in your home? How did you overcome your design dilemmas?

I wouldn’t say there is a challenging space because I believe with a little creativity, you can make anything work! The most challenging thing is being patient and saving up for all renovations in advance of any house projects.

Which space is your favorite? Why?

My favorite space in my home is my kitchen because my husband and I worked really hard last year to bring our vision to life. He made my dreams a reality and was willing to allow me to go all-white and even to cover all the walls in subway tile.

IMG_1025

Which room are you constantly changing?

All of them. I like change, and to me, my home is my canvas. It’s a reflection of what meets our needs and suits are tastes at that given moment in time. And with a young family and a growing business, our needs are constantly changing, and therefore so is our home.

IMG_1023

IMG_0545IMG_0546IMG_0547IMG_0548IMG_0549IMG_0550

What is the boldest design choice you’ve made?

My boldest design choice was painting the wall in my master bedroom an almost-black color (Noir by Valspar). I am often drawn to light colors, but I found myself craving a dark moody color and felt like my master bedroom wall could handle that color because the room gets a lot of light. I love the contrast of my white shiplap headboard (which my husband and I designed and built) against the black wall. It was a risky bold choice, but one that really paid off and I love it. It’s important that we push our own boundaries and take style risks because that’s how we grow and learn to trust our individual style instincts.

IMG_1077

IMG_1046IMG_0552IMG_0553  IMG_0955

Where do you usually start with when designing a room? How long does it typically take you to come up with a design for a space? What is your process? Where do you find inspiration?

When designing a room, I find that one item or one idea will spark the whole process. It may be an item I purchase from a shop, or a paint sample I see in a store, or a photo of a beautiful space in a magazine or on instagram. And that one bit of inspiration drives the design of the rest of them room. It’s like one drop of inspiration unleashes a flood of design ideas. I find that designing a room is the easy part, but waiting patiently to implement the design is what takes time.

IMG_1078

IMG_0566IMG_0954IMG_0567

How do you balance your aesthetic with your significant other, children and pets?

I believe that style also needs to suit real life, so I strive to create a home that is beautiful yet functional. Stylish yet practical. It’s not always an easy balance, but I truly believe homes should be lived in. And it doesn’t bother me when things get dented or dinged a little bit. They’re just things, and at the end of the day, having a home full of happy memories is the most important part.

IMG_1031

IMG_1043IMG_1044IMG_0551IMG_1045

What is the most sentimental or favorite piece of decor in your home?

My most sentimental piece of décor is an antique enamelware pitcher & bowl that I bought on my first anniversary with my husband. It is the piece that sparked my interest in authentic antiques. And it was the first piece in what would become my authentic enamelware collection that was featured in Country Living magazine last year.

What have you splurged on?

Last year when we renovated our kitchen, we splurged on our farmhouse sink and quartz countertops.

Where are your favorite places to shop for decor?

My favorite places to shop for décor are small shops run by creative ambitious entrepreneurs. I am continually inspired by those who work hard in the pursuit of their dreams and who have chosen to share their talents with the world. Many of my favorite small shops are ones I’ve discovered through instagram!

IMG_1030

What’s something on your project list you’d like to do in your home?

On the top of my home project list is to replace the flooring on the first floor of our home. I currently refer to it as my ‘patchwork quilt’ of flooring since it is a combination of different types of tile and hardwood too. One day it will be one consistent type of wood floor!

IMG_1088

IMG_0492IMG_0564IMG_0565

What current home trend are you loving?

The current home trend I’m loving is the increased popularity of greenery hung in macramé planters!

If you could live anywhere where would it be and what style of home would you want to live in?

If I could live anywhere right now, I’d love to live near Nashville in a modern farmhouse style home.

5 Random Facts….

I love chocolate chip cookies. I cannot get enough of them. I lived in North Carolina for a few years and loved it, and I hope to get back to the South one day. Two years ago, I didn’t even know what a hashtag was, so I googled it. True story. I am an interesting combination of extrovert and introvert. I believe in dreaming big and surrounding myself with positive people!
